A New Build Hempcrete Dual Residence
Project Type: A two storey new build with adjacent single storey residence.
Project Duration: 26 weeks.
Project Summary: A new build Hempcrete two storey with adjacent single storey residence.
Methods of construction specific to this project.
New build of two very low energy houses with a timber column beam structure with a complete singlewall outer envelope of 42 cm made from Hempbuild Isohemp hempcrete blocks (12 cm + 30 cm). Lime render exterior finish.
The 42 cm thick Isohemp hempcrete blocks insulating envelope protects the buildings wooden structure allowing it to breathe over its lifetime. The added thickness of the envelope increases the buildings thermal performance, dramatically lowering heating and cooling costs.
The envelopes exterior was plastered with a 20 mm coat of sand and lime. This created a tough vapour permeable barrier and gave the building a unique natural look that will last.
This project showed us that a new build benifits hugely from the application of sustainable low impact products. The Hempcrete envelope not only preserves the buildings health but allows the application of more traditional finishes, giving this project a high quality long lasting soloution.

Additional construction methods available on this type of project.
The hempcrete blocks naturally regulate the humidity and temperature of the building, it maintains a constant interior temperature and significantly reduces heating and cooling costs as the hempcrete acts as a thermal buffer. The Isohemp blocks acts as a genuine sound trap, dampening the majority of sound waves and thus reducing noise pollution. By using larger thicknesses of hempcrete blocks these values may be increased.
Hempflax Plus is specially adapted for interior insulation and would work particularly well on a structure like this. This would increase insulation values thus improving the buildings performance and reducing energy cost whilst also reducing the carbon footprint.
A range of plasters and finishes could be used. Traditional sand and lime mixes may be used. Clay based plasters and paints maybe used. Internal or external wood cladding may be used.
Hempbuild Isohemp Hempcrete Block Advantages
Maximises space without loss of performance.
Quick and easy implementation.
Hempbuild’s Isohemp hempcrete blocks have an excellent fire resistance (class B for the rendered block), hempcrete is inflammable and does not release any toxins or gases.
Easy to fix items directly to the wall, gutters, lights, etc.
Thermal regulation: The hemp block naturally stores and dissipates accumulated heat, which help to keep the building cool in summer and warm in winter.
Natural humidity regulation: Thanks to its high permeability to water vapour, the hemp block acts as a moisture buffer. Deals well with moisture and dampness in old walls.
Mold resistant: Hemp has a strong natural resistance to mold and bacteria.
Environmentally friendly: Our hempblocks are carbon negative and contain no VOC's or harmful toxins for inhabitants.
